In April 2000, City Centre Initiative, the town centre management in Derry~Londonderry, initiated the City Centre Rangers Service with the appointment of two staff. Building on a concept which originated in Boston, USA, and popular across many British cities, the Rangers were to welcome visitors; offering information and advice to city centre users; providing a link between local businesses and public agencies with responsibilities for city centre management ; and be the “eyes on the street”, on the look-out for hazards and problems.

When the idea of deploying Rangers was first conceived, no one could have predicted the extensive and positive impact it would have had on the city centre and those who use it. The Rangers have become an integral part of the efficient running of a continually responsive city centre. The role of the Rangers has evolved extensively over time, with their duties and responsibilities growing constantly.

At City Centre Initiative we take pride in the fact that we are able to provide innovative solutions to community safety issues. An example of this can be seen where the Rangers identified a dangerous area behind the Cathedral Youth Club. This area attracted many youths carrying out anti-social behaviour. The Rangers supported the Youth Club in a huge clean up of this area. All types of litter were lifted including glass that was a danger to young children, especially since the ground is adjacent to the Fountain Primary School. The Youth Club children now maintain the area. This project proved to be extremely worthwhile.
